I-STOP (Internet System for Tracking Over-Prescribing) was passed by the New York State legislature to help combat the rising rates of prescription drug abuse in New York. The law requires that all New York state providers adopt electronic prescribing for all legend drug and Schedule II-V controlled substance prescriptions by March 27, 2016.
Drug overdoses have become a leading cause of death in the United States. In New York alone, the number of drug overdose deaths – a majority of which are from prescription drugs – has increased by 56% since 1999. By e-prescribing legend drugs and controlled substances, providers will reduce drug misuse while at the same time improve their clinical workflows, and ultimately, help improve patient outcomes.
